There is an art to choosing a nickname.
It should be accurate and snappy, while also needing to roll off the tongue.
If early evidence is to be believed, Bobbi 'Flash' Flood is as apt as it is catchy.
Flood (2-0, 1 KO) will make his third professional appearance when boxing at Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday night but the 21-year-old Irishman has already he can drag an opponent into deep waters quickly and without warning.
“My sister just said I’d have to have a nickname being a pro now so she just came up with ‘Flash’ Flood,” he told The Ring.
“There was ‘Hurricane’ in there as well but I just think ‘Flash’ Flood just goes better.”
Junior middleweights around the world should start thinking about shoring up their flood defences. The Dubliner already looks certain to be a flag bearer of Irish boxing for years to come.
Irish boxing is booming.
There is a long list of talented fighters operating at title level and the 3Arena is becoming a regular stop on the boxing circuit.
The conditions look ideal for Flood and heavyweight prospect Adam Olaniyan (2-0, 2 KOs) to develop into fighters and characters capable of headlining events for years to come.
Flood won 10 national titles and European youth gold as an amateur whilst Olaniyan won seven national titles and a world youth gold. The two are longtime friends and there is nobody Flood would rather share the spotlight with.
“Yeah, we are the new faces of Irish boxing now in the pro game. Especially me and Adam being so young, we'll have to just take that in our stride and just keep pushing, keep the pace until we can say, 'You know what? We are the faces.'” he said.
“Still a lot of time to go, but we're still only two young kids chasing their dreams. I'm glad to be doing it beside Adam, being on the same shows because we've known each other since being kids on boxing trips.
“It’s great to see him living the same life because I know I dreamt of it so he's definitely done the same. We're just two young kids from a council estate living our dream life.”
Some talented young fighters get caught up in the excitement of turning professional and end up neglecting the qualities that made them successful amateurs.
As well as challenging for a professional world title, Flood’s trainer Stephen ‘Swifty’ Smith was an outstanding amateur fighter. He quickly realised the style that brought Flood such success will also help make him an effective pro.
Rather than have Flood slow down his work and probe for openings, Smith realised his new student was smart enough to think and incorporate the things they work on in the gym whilst operating at his customary high pace.
“I thought once I turned pro it was going to be all slowed down but I'm just keeping that amateur pace,” Flood said.
“I’m obviously relaxing on the feet a little bit but I'm still boom-boom, boom, boom, boom, boom-boom rather than just throwing two shots, taking a step back and relaxing and then two again. I'm keeping the pace high.
“That's what ‘Swifty’ always does when we're on the pads. It’s always high pace pads. He wants me to keep that amateur pace up because a lot of pros can't deal with it. They like catching them - I do too - and throwing back but if someone's hitting you with three or four punches, you block three and one or two are going to land.”
