LOS ANGELES – Jaime Munguia is hungry to become a world champion again, a designation the former junior middleweight titleholder hasn’t held since 2019.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) will get another crack at a crown when he takes on WBA beltholder Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The all-Mexican matchup will co-headline a Cinco de Mayo weekend show featuring David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez.
Munguia enters the Resendiz fight having completed a second training camp with former rival-turned-teammate Canelo Alvarez’s career-long coach, Eddy Reynoso.
The ex-undisputed super middleweight champion Alvarez plans to continue campaigning in the 168-pound weight class moving forward once he returns this fall following a September loss against Terence Crawford.
If Munguia wins the title, his alignment with Alvarez, who outpointed him by a wide margin in 2024, may become complicated.
“We're teammates, and I don't know what the future will hold,” Munguia told The Ring.
“But what I can say is that I am dead set on being a world champion. That's my goal. I know that Canelo can be a world champion once again as well, and there is no doubt about that. We are going to move forward on our own paths and see where it takes us. I don't think a rematch will happen, but you never know. Never say never.”
Alvarez most likely will target a host of other fighters before even contemplating Munguia.
Fresh blood like Christian Mbilli, Osleys Iglesias, Hamzah Sheeraz, Lester Martinez, and Resendiz will be high atop Alvarez’s list as he enters the final chapter of his illustrious career.
“Canelo and I have talked about Resendiz before, and he told me that I have all the tools I need to come out on top," said Munguia. “Experience is on my side, no doubt about it. I’ve faced the bigger names. I know my way through 12 rounds. I have the edge.
“Having Eddy Reynoso in my corner is truly an honor. He provides me with the tools I need to feel confident throughout fight week and when I step into the ring.
"I’m going to go after the knockout. I can’t predict a specific round, but I can guarantee that the fans will witness a show on May 2.”
