Jake Paul is riding high after another mega event in November when “The Problem Child” was able to get Mike Tyson out of retirement to easily outpoint the 58-year-old icon.
On Friday, Paul’s company Most Valuable Promotions held a show at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida in conjunction with the WBA's annual convention. Following the event, Paul addressed multiple topics that have been simmering since the Tyson fight for which he reportedly made $40 million for.
“There’s no response to the reaction of the Tyson fight,” said Paul. “I quite frankly didn’t look at it. What do I care what people have to say about anything that I do? If anyone in my life has something to say, they’ll text me. And if you don’t have my number, then I don’t give a fuck about you. All of the texts were, best event ever, incredible, you’re the face of boxing, all of these things, record breaking, love, love, love. That’s all I care about ... People are just upset that it’s permanently on BoxRec that I beat Mike Tyson.
“That’s the landscape we’re in, just everyone’s trying to talk shit and peacock and jockey for their position. But beyond all the shit talk, I don’t want to just create a back and forth of nonsense, but I have the biggest fight in boxing history. Numbers tell the truth of that. So people can say whatever they want. Let me see if you do more numbers, and then we can talk.
“And it’s funny because all these people are always talking about us and we never talk about them until it’s in an interview and we’re asked about them so we never say a word about these people who are fighting in an ice rink in Detroit with five fans, giving away tickets.”
Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) turned pro at the beginning of 2020 and has already beaten past-their-prime UFC fighters like Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz, Tyron Woodley (twice), Ben Askren, and Mike Perry, among others.
Paul has world title ambitions but doesn’t care about climbing the contender’s ladder to get there.
"Oh, fuck the [cruiserweight] rankings. It's a number. Who cares?” said Paul. “Like, literally. People just want to classify things and do a numbers chart. I've never looked at the rankings. I couldn't care less. I know I'm the best in the world and I'm going to be the world champion.
“There’s like a long line of people [who want to fight me]. They can take a ticket and get in line to see who I want to fight next – seriously. I don’t say that as shit talk. I’m the biggest payday in the sport of boxing right now so everybody wants to fight. And when you’re the hot girl on the block, you can do what the fuck you want.”
As for who’s next for Paul, he continues to call out super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez, who, as of late, now appears open to the idea of entertaining the matchup. Just don’t expect for Paul to challenge one of Alvarez’s faded former rivals.
"I want someone tougher [than Julio Cesar Chavez Jr] and I want a real belt,” said Paul. “Honestly, he's easy work. I want someone tougher to shut people up.”
