After pushing Teofimo Lopez and Vasiliy Lomachenko to the limits in close decision losses, Jamaine Ortiz met his match in Keyshawn Davis last week.
In their chief support bout preceding Shakur Stevenson's impressive display against Teofimo Lopez during "The Ring 6" show in New York, there could be no doubt about the outcome.
Davis outclassed Ortiz and dropped him in the 11th and 12th rounds before referee Thomas Taylor waved off the junior welterweight fight with 13 seconds remaining. The debilitating damage piled on courtesy of a dedicated attack to the body from Davis. Both knockdowns came courtesy of sweeping left hooks to Ortiz's midsection.
Davis outlanded Ortiz 180 to 88 in the fight, according to CompuBox.
On Tuesday, Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 KOs) opened up about the ordeal.
"January 31 at Madison Square Garden didn't go as planned," Ortiz said on social media. "There were over 21,000 people in the building and I didn't get the victory. I’ve been off the grid reflecting a bit. Here is where my head is at – camp was great, my weight cut was one of my best and the strategy was locked in. My opponent did exactly what we expected him to do. He didn't surprise me; he was just the better man that night."
Still in his prime at 29, Ortiz is very much considered a top operator and figures to be matched tough moving forward against fellow contenders and up-and-coming talent.
Davis meanwhile, leveraged the win to a No. 1 spot in the WBO rankings and is now The Ring's No. 3-rated player at junior welterweight.
