Jaron Ennis entered a new weight class recently, but he will stay with the promoter that helped broaden his fan base in the United States.
Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing announced Friday that the former unified welterweight champion has agreed to a multi-fight, multi-year agreement with the company. Ennis, 28, initially signed with Matchroom last spring after the death of his longtime promoter, Cameron Dunkin, in January 2024.
After enduring a one-year layoff, the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native fought three times over a nine-month span in events promoted by Matchroom.
Ennis headlined two of those cards in his hometown at Wells Fargo Center, home of the NBA’s Sixers and NHL’s Flyers. Both of those shows drew crowds in excess of 10,000, despite that Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs, 1 NC) was heavily favored to defeat Russia’s David Avanesyan in July 2024 and Ukraine’s Karen Chukhadzhian on Nov. 9.
In his third fight with Matchroom, Ennis stopped previously unbeaten WBA welterweight champ Eimantas Stanionis after six one-sided rounds April 12 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Ennis also added The Ring welterweight championship to his IBF crown by beating Lithuania’s Stanionis (15-1, 9 KOs, 1 NC).
The multidimensional fighter nicknamed “Boots” gave up those three titles when he announced June 18 that he would move up from the 147-pound division to the junior middleweight limit of 154 for his next fight.
Hearn has discussed numerous opponents with Ennis and his team for his junior middleweight debut, but they have yet to choose one for his next fight sometime in the fall.
