Jaron “Boots” Ennis has his sights set on becoming a two-division unified champion when he faces Xander Zayas on June 27 at Barclays Center.
Beating Zayas for his WBA and WBO titles would be the first and a significant step in Ennis’ plan to establish himself as the best junior middleweight. Ultimately, the 28-year-old contender from Philadelphia foresees his run going all the way up to super middleweight as he seeks to become the best fighter of his era.
“Every weight division I’m at, I’m going to take over one by one,” Ennis said during an episode of “Inside The Ring,” which premiered Monday on DAZN. “I wanted to be undisputed at 147, but there was a lot of playing around down there. I was able to become a unified and lineal champ, and I was able to get the Ring Magazine [title] – that’s one of the most important belts.
“I did my part down there. We got [to] ‘54, and we’re going to be undisputed at ‘54 and then ‘60 and then ‘68. I'm ready to be a generational legend and show the world I’m the best.”
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs), who is The Ring’s No. 5 junior middleweight, first became The Ring, IBF and WBA welterweight champion in April 2025, when he defeated Eimantas Stanionis by sixth-round stoppage. He moved up to 154 pounds, and in his lone fight at the weight class, he dropped Uisma Lima twice before stopping him in the first round October 11.
All signs pointed to Ennis facing The Ring’s No. 1 junior middleweight, Vergil Ortiz, next after they went face-to-face following the latter's second-round stoppage of Erickson Lubin on November 8. A legal battle between Ortiz (24-0, 22 KOs) and Golden Boy Promotions forced Ennis to pivot and paved the way for him to face Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 154-pounder, in a main event DAZN will stream to subscribers of its Ultimate plan and on pay-per-view to non-subscribers.
Zayas, 23, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, won the vacant WBO title on July 26, when he beat Jorge Garcia by unanimous decision. He added the WBA title to his collection when he beat Abass Baraou by split decision in a unification bout January 31.
Ennis commended Zayas for taking the fight when he could have opted for an easier assignment, including another unification clash against IBF champion Josh Kelly. However, he believes Zayas will prove to be a steppingstone that culminates in him becoming the top junior middleweight.
“After I’m victorious on June 27 and become unified champion at 154, bring them on,” Ennis said. “After this fight, I’m going to continue to show you why I’m the best in the world and why I am really like that. I’m going to make everything easy.”
