Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller likely earned another significant fight after his unanimous decision victory over Lenier Pero in their WBA heavyweight title eliminator.
Miller (28-1-2, 22 KOs) called out numerous heavyweights for his next fight, including Deontay Wilder. The 37-year-old claimed Wilder previously said he didn't want to fight him, but hopes that can change in the future.
“He said a long time ago that he didn’t want to fight “Big Baby,” because I hurt his feelings,” Miller said of the former WBC heavyweight champion post-fight. “If you don’t shut your pie ass up and come fight me, boy.”
Miller’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn, said he views Miller-Wilder as the fight to make.
“When I look at the fights in the division as a promoter, you want a fight with great build-up,” Hearn said. “You want a fight with jeopardy. For me, the American fight is Deontay Wilder against Jarrell Miller. Run it in New York — that’s a serious fight.
Deontay’s comeback was a good win against Chisora. I think that’s a big fight for American boxing. Deontay Wilder in New York, for me that’s the fight for the American heavyweight scene.”
Wilder (45-4-1, 43 KOs) last fought on April 4, defeating Derek Chisora by split decision in London and is similarly on a two-fight winning streak like Miller.
Pero (13-1, 8 KOs) got off to a quick start as he outboxed Miller and landed the more significant shots in the first two rounds. The momentum shifted in the Brooklyn native’s favor as he pressured the 33-year-old to the ropes and kept him there for sustained periods, turning it into a phonebooth brawl.
Miller’s volume and pressure, combined with having more than a 50-pound weight advantage, overwhelmed the southpaw from Camaguey, Cuba, and he took over as the rounds progressed. Miller outlanded Pero 290 to 253, per CompuBox stats, and he threw 1,003 punches, which is the 10th-most by a heavyweight in its history.
