Earlier this week former flyweight world title challenger Jay Harris announced his retirement from boxing.
The 34-year-old Welshman had won British, Commonwealth and European titles in a productive career but come up short against then WBC 112-pound titlist Julio Cesar Martinez (UD 12) at The Ford Center at The Star, Frisco, Texas, in February 2020.
After returning he suffered back-to-back defeats to Ricardo Sandoval (KO 8) and Hector Flores Calixto (KO 6).
Unperturbed, he rebounded with three wins, which included road wins over Tommy Frank (TKO 10) to win the British title and regaining his old Commonwealth and European titles besting Connor Butler (UD 12).
However, he last fought in February 2024 and had found opportunities and desire lacking.
"Massive thank you for everyone who's been a part of my career, many ups and downs, many memories that I will cherish forever. Won and fought for everything I can finally say that I'm retired," said Harris on his Twitter/ X account on Tuesday.
Harris bows out with a record of 21-3, (11 knockouts).
Today, the EBU acted to fill the vacancy when they matched Conner Kelsall (12-0, 1 KO) and Conor Quinn (10-1-1, 6 KOs) in what will be a rematch of their evenly contested fight last June.
Kelsall claimed the vacant Commonwealth title by edging home by 12-round majority decision in front of Quinn's fans in Belfast.
The two parties have until March 5 to come to reach a deal, if not the fight will go to a purse bid.
