Reaching the top of the mountain is a euphoric feeling but falling from its lofty heights is painful.
In one night, Jeison Rosario went from an unknown name to a unified champion. Ironically enough, it also took just one night for him to fall back into obscurity.
After grabbing both the IBF and WBA titles against Julian Williams, Rosario (24-4-2, 18 KOs) was thrown into the fire against Jermell Charlo. With an opportunity to win even more gold, Rosario sauntered into their 2020 showdown as confident as ever. Ultimately, however, his self-belief wasn’t enough as Charlo dropped him several times before eventually stopping him.
Since then, it’s been difficult for the 29-year-old to get back on track. He suffered an immediate loss against Erickson Lubin but rebounded to win three straight before getting brutally stopped again, this time against Brian Mendoza. More recently, Rosario was forced to settle for a split decision draw against long-faded former champion, Jarrett Hurd.
His current form isn’t the best but Rosario is hoping that his luck will change when he takes on The Ring’s No. 9 ranked junior middleweight, Jesus Ramos Jr.
Rosario is talking a good game but oddsmakers simply don’t believe him as they have him listed as a gigantic underdog. The immediate plan, of course, is to make everyone eat their words. If he does, Rosario knows what he wants to do next. No, he isn’t exactly interested in avenging his losses to Charlo, Lubin, or Mendoza.
When Rosario is introduced by ring announcers, they mention that he is a former champion. For the Dominican, the word former rubs him the wrong way.
“I’m going for the titles,” said Rosario to a group of reporters. “Regardless of who has them.”
Looking ahead can get Rosario caught up. In fact, he may blame some of his lackluster losses on doing just that. Ramos isn’t a walk in the park but there isn’t an ounce of apprehension flowing through the blood of the one-time champ. He doesn’t want to come off as dismissive of his opponent but he knows his future goals are as big as it gets.
“My objective is to get my hands on some titles.”
