LAS VEGAS — Former two-division champion Jermall Charlo is more subdued these days, but he’s still talking a big game, much like he did when he was an active fighter.

But after fighting only once in the last four years, Charlo has fallen off the boxing map as he’s dealt with mental health issues as well as a DWI arrest last May when he fled the scene of an accident and eluded police, which resulted in three misdemeanor charges, and separately, the stripping of his WBC middleweight title.

As fights against Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant passed him by, Charlo is ready to step back into boxing when he takes on Thomas LaManna on Saturday at Mandalay Bay to co-headline a PBC on Prime Video show.

At 35, Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) realizes it's now or never as he envisions a turn-back-the-clock-like performance, much like he did during his heyday with wins against Austin Trout, Julian Williams and Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

“It’s time for me to get back. ... I had to get some negative people away from me, and now I’m ready to go,” Plant told The Ring. "I feel fresher now. I’m ready to get back. I feel better now. I’m clear-minded and I'm ready to bounce back. I’m ready to go. I appreciate all of my fans who have been patient with me.”

Charlo is looking to prove he still belongs in a different league than LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs), who four years ago would never have been mentioned as a possible opponent after he was laid to waste in a first-round knockout by an aging Erislandy Lara.

But the falloff has been somewhat steep for the Houston native Charlo, who was 3.4 pounds overweight last time out in November 2023 for a 163-pound catchweight bout and a unanimous decision win against Jose Benavidez Jr.

“LaManna is running his mouth ... and being disrespectful, and that's what's going to make me want to knock him the [expletive] out,” said Charlo, adding that he can beat him using only his jab. “I'm coming to fight. I'm coming to be physical. I have to show my strength.”

Charlo was supposed to get the Alvarez lottery ticket in September 2023, but he was unfit to fight. His twin brother, Jermell, got the opportunity instead and lost by a landslide decision. Three months before, Charlo got into a backstage scuffle with Plant, who delivered a vicious slap.

Plant (23-2, 14 KOs), a former super middleweight champion, will headline the card Charlo is featured on when he faces Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs). If Plant and Charlo are victorious, they’re expected to face each other later this year.

Charlo is confident he’ll beat Plant and then get the Canelo fight that was promised to him.

“I need my fade against Caleb,” said Charlo. “We're going to get this bag. I am going to be a winner. And this Jermall Charlo beats Canelo. That's off of techniques, natural ability. After Plant, that's the fight that's next. That's the fight, and I can end my career.

"But you can't focus on all the other fights. I'm just locked in with what's going on. I try not to look too far beyond. I'm in the moment, right here.”
