A rejuvenated Charlo, who endured personal problems that have helped keep him from being more active, is thankful there are enough fans still interested in him fighting Plant to make it a viable alternative if he beats LaManna.
Jermall Charlo and Caleb Plant didn’t divulge details of the conversation they had on stage while emcee Ray Flores conducted a press conference May 7 in Los Angeles to promote their fights Saturday night.
They have both been open, though, about wanting to fight each other next if they beat big underdogs in super middleweight matches Amazon’s Prime Video will stream from Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino’s Michelob ULTRA Arena.
Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) is a 12-1 favorite vs. Thomas LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) in Premier Boxing Champions’ 10-round co-feature. Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) is favored by a larger margin, 20-1, to defeat Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) in its 12-round main event.
“We had some words for each other,” Charlo told The Ring about their conversation on stage. “He kinda understand what’s going on. And we gonna make some money. We gonna fight. We gonna make it happen in due time.”
Houston’s Charlo, 35, will attempt to make up for lost time when he meets LaManna in his first fight since November 2023.
The former IBF junior middleweight and WBC middleweight champ will end an 18-month layoff and fight for just fourth time in the past 5½ years. LaManna, of Millville, New Jersey, has won nine fights in a row since Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara landed a single left hand that knocked him out in the opening round to defend his WBA middleweight title in May 2021 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
A rejuvenated Charlo, who endured personal problems that have helped keep him from being more active, is thankful there are enough fans still interested in him fighting Plant to make it a viable alternative if he beats LaManna.
“It’s something the fans want, so let’s give it to ‘em,” Charlo said. “We spoke about it. He has some things going on. Congrats to him, his wife, the new baby and their family. Shoot, you can’t hate on him. I had some ups and downs in my career, and I still made it to this point to be able to draw enough attention to where the fans still wanna see that fight. So, let’s get it done. It’s part of our legacy. I’m down for it, he down for it, so I don’t see why it can’t happen if we got the same handlers.”
Even if Mexico’s Resendiz were to upset Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champ from Ashland City, Tennessee, the 6-foot-1 Charlo is committed to being active this year in a new weight class, perhaps even higher.
“I understand there’s bigger fights for me in the future at 168,” Charlo said, “even at 175.”
The rivalry between Charlo and Plant grew more intense in July 2023. Plant slapped him in the face after Terence Crawford and Errol Spence weighed in for their welterweight title unification fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Onlookers separated them. Charlo had infuriated Plant by grabbing his face and pulling on his beard earlier that day.
Charlo indicated they talked about that infamous incident when they were together May 7, but he didn’t elaborate.
“Me and Caleb,” he said, “we discussed some things and we kinda got an understanding of what’s going on. So, we’ll just leave it like that.”
