After realizing that a matchup with Canelo Alvarez wasn’t possible, Charlo and his handlers focused on negotiations with Caleb Plant. The two had history. But one of them didn't hold up their end of the bargain.
Sitting on the sidelines isn’t fun, but it’s something Jermall Charlo has grown accustomed to.
For the better part of the last five years, the Houston, Texas, native has had mental health and personal issues. He has fought just three times since September 2020.
In 2021, following his win over Juan Macias Montiel, Charlo stayed away from the ring for more than two years. In November 2023, he disappeared for 1.5 years, after his lopsided victory over Jose Benavidez Jr.
In May, Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) came back again and made things look easy against Thomas LaManna. That sixth-round stoppage win in Las Vegas, however, is now yesterday’s news.
“I’m ready to fight,” Charlo wrote on his Instagram account.
Unfortunately for him, he’ll have to play the waiting game.
The 35-year-old doesn’t have a feasible opponent at the moment, though he almost did.

In 2023, during the lead-up to Errol Spence vs. Terence Crawford, Charlo and Plant had a verbal and physical altercation. Plant slapped Charlo across the face.
Instead of pitting them against each other, they fought on the same card against different opponents. Charlo looked spectacular against LaManna. Plant, however, didn’t hold up his end of the bargain, losing a split decision to Jose Armando Resendiz.
Despite Plant coming up short, both said they'd still be willing to fight.
