Former undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo has announced that his comeback is imminent.
“Premier Boxing, give me the best you got, or whoever you think can handle me at 154. Let the fans choose. Lions only. Make it make sense,” Charlo wrote on social media.
“Iron Man” Charlo (35-2-1), who turns 35 in May, has not fought since moving up to 168 pounds in September 2023 to challenge Canelo Alvarez in a battle between undisputed champions. The Houston native was knocked down in the seventh round and was never really in the fight, eventually dropping a unanimous decision in a lackluster performance.
Matters did not get better for the 18-year veteran outside of the ring. In December 2023, Charlo was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault, and court records showed that Charlo’s wife filed for a temporary restraining order along with a divorce.
In August, a PBC official stated the “welcome mat” would be rolled out for Charlo whenever he was ready to return.
Before the Alvarez fight, Charlo sat on top of the 154-pound world in May 2022 after knocking out Brian Castaño to become the undisputed champion. But Charlo never defended his titles.
The division’s landscape has dramatically changed since Charlo last laced up a pair of gloves as a 154-pounder.
Terence Crawford (WBA), Sebastian Fundora (WBC, WBO), and Bakhram Murtazaliev (IBF) are the champions who are now headlining the weight class.
The Ring title is currently vacant, but contenders like Vergil Ortiz Jr., Israil Madrimov, Serhii Bohachuk, Charles Conwell, Jesus Ramos, Erickson Lubin, Tim Tszyu, Xander Zayas, Brian Mendoza, and the inactive likes of Errol Spence Jr. and Keith Thurman could all give Charlo a run for his money during his return.
