WBC strawweight titlist Melvin Jerusalem will have a rematch in his next outing, though not the one many hoped for.
Jerusalem (25-3, 12 KOs) will face Siyakholwa Kuse (9-3-1, 4 KOs) in an immediate rematch at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa on May 16 in the challenger's home country, having beaten him by 12-round unanimous decision on October 29.
In a turn of events, Jerusalem had been tabbed for a unification against Ring and WBA/WBO ruler Oscar Collazo. When budget constraints put that fight on ice though, Collazo elected to stay busy against Jesus Haro in Anaheim, California on March 14.
That left Jerusalem to wait for a summer showdown. However, rather than do that Jerusalem has taken things into his own hands and will instead head into enemy territory.
Golden Gloves head honcho Rodney Berman nipped in and was able to quickly broker a deal for his fighter, originally due to face Joey Canoy in a WBC eliminator on March 28. This development sees him get a second consecutive title shot.
"To give perspective of just how massive the fight is for South Africa, only one South African has ever in our history, fought for and won the coveted green belt in a South African ring. That was 26 years ago when Dingaan Thobela sensationally stopped Glenn Catley with seconds to go," Berman told The Ring.
"The only other fighter to have won the title in the ring was Sugar Boy Malinga [held the title twice, won overseas] so the fight is massive.
"Kuse is fired up to emulate two South African greats - we all objectively felt the first fight was desperately close notwithstanding the scorecards disparity, which was desperately biased and could well have been ruled in Kuse's favor. He won't let this opportunity slip."
Jerusalem, The Ring's No. 1-rated strawweight, fell narrowly short when losing a 12-round decision to then-WBC champion Wanheng Menayothin. He made amends in his second opportunity, scoring a second-round finish of Masataka Taniguchi for the WBO strap.
He yielded the title in his first defense against Collazo (RTD7) but impressively bounced back to annex the WBC title from Yudai Shigeoka with a 12-round split decision. He has made three defenses, including a Shigeoka rematch and Kuse last time out.
South Africa's Kuse, rated No. 4 by The Ring in a busy 105-pound division, claimed domestic honors at the second time of asking when stopping Sibusiso Bandla in five rounds.
The 22-year-old southpaw edged past stablemate Beavon Sibanda in a 12-round majority decision before stepping into the international class with a 10-round points win over former world title challenger Samuel Salva.
That came before his close, competitive defeat against Jerusalem, one he'll look to avenge among home comforts this time around.
The undercard will be headed up by rising heavyweight talent Juan Alberts (7-0-1, 5 KOs), facing a vastly more experienced figure in well-traveled Senad Gashi (34-4, 32 KOs) over eight rounds.
