A win over David Morrell was supposed to be the “ah ha” moment for David Benavidez.
Morrell was a highly touted Cuban with a ton of skills but when they matched up this past February, Benavidez, who already held the interim WBC title, mowed through him with relative ease. Once he grabbed the victory, the 28-year-old was elevated to the mandatory challenger position for Dmitry Bivol.
Ultimately, Benavidez won’t be getting the opportunity to challenge him as Bivol recently dropped his WBC crown. In doing so, Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) was immediately pushed to full champion.
Now, the focus for Team Benavidez will be on getting him an opponent. The light heavyweight division, luckily for him, has plenty of options. One name, however, believes he’s more deserving than anyone else.
“I think it makes all the sense in the world,” said Jesse Hart when asked about a showdown with Benavidez. “I don’t think he has any other place to go.”
It’s been a while since the listless version of Hart (31-3, 25 KOs) showed up to an arena. He learned from his losses to Gilberto Ramirez and Joe Smith Jr. and turned himself into the fighter who’s currently on a five-fight win streak, four coming via stoppage. Still, despite looking as good as ever, Hart figures to be a big-time underdog in a possible matchup with Benavidez. Simply put, there’s a reason why he’s been given the nickname “The Mexican Monster.”
Hart though, doesn’t understand all of the hype. He won’t go out there and claim that the newly crowned WBC light heavyweight belt holder is an overblown figment of our imagination. But, this “monster” that they speak of? Hart wants to experience why they call him that.
“I need to know if he’s really like that. I don’t believe he’s like that. I don’t believe he’s that. I gotta feel the fire.”
