One of the most iconic voices in boxing broadcasting will return to his prominent place at ringside soon.
Jim Lampley announced via The Ring on Sunday night that he will be the blow-by-blow announcer for the May 2 tripleheader at Times Square in New York, sponsored by the 103-year-old “Bible of Boxing.” Lampley, 75, has not called a fight live since December 2018, when he ended his 30-year tenure at HBO by working the premium cable network’s final boxing telecast from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California
Lampley’s return is fitting considering the magnitude of this three-bout broadcast, which will be offered on pay-per-view to American and British audiences. “FATAL FURY: City of Wolves” will feature three intriguing junior welterweight fights – Ryan Garcia-Rolando “Rolly” Romero, Devin Haney-Jose Ramirez and Teofimo Lopez-Arnold Barboza Jr.
“Hello again, I’m Jim Lampley,” Lampley said in a video posted to The Ring’s social media accounts. “And I’m here to announce that after a few years away from ringside, I will be returning May 2, under the banner of The Ring magazine, to cover the tripleheader in Times Square that involves Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez. A new groundbreaking event for the sport, outside, in the middle of New York City. I’ll be back at ringside to call blow-by-blow. Couldn’t be more excited about it.”
According to FanDuel sportsbook, Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC), of Victorville, California, is a 7-1 favorite to defeat Romero (16-2, 13 KOs), a former WBA super lightweight champ from North Las Vegas, Nevada. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), the onetime fully unified lightweight champ from Henderson, Nevada, is a 10-1 favorite to beat Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), an Avenal, California native who once owned the WBC and WBO 140-pound titles.
Las Vegas’ Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) will defend his Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles when he boxes Barboza (32-0, 11 KOs), a longtime rival from South El Monte, California. Lopez opened as a 3-1 favorite over Barboza, The Ring’s No. 4 contender in the junior welterweight division.
Haney is The Ring’s No. 1 contender in the 140-pound weight class.
A press conference to promote the abovementioned tripleheader is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon in Manhattan.
Lampley, meanwhile, is also preparing for the release of his book, “It Happened! A Uniquely Lucky Life In Sports Television.” The memoir is due out in bookstores and to online retailers April 15.
An International Boxing Hall of Fame member, Lampley spent 50 years in television overall, 30 at HBO. In addition to his renowned work in boxing, he was the first network television college football sideline reporter and covered 14 Olympics.
Lampley ended an almost five-year hiatus from boxing with PPV.com, the streaming division for In Demand, by working the Canelo Alvarez-Jermell Charlo pay-per-view fight in September 2023. He participates in live chats during pay-per-view shows offered by In Demand’s cable partners in the United States and conducts interviews for the company’s website and social media platforms during fight weeks.
