Sam Noakes and Abdullah Mason aren't yet household names in boxing, but they could be set to clash for a world title later this year.
Recently, the WBO mandated a showdown between No. 1-ranked contender Noakes, of Maidstone, England, and Mason, ranked No. 2 with the governing body out of Cleveland, Ohio.
Former junior lightweight world champion Joe Cordina is among the many interested in seeing how that fight will play out. On paper, you have the aggressive Noakes who doesn’t take no for an answer. On the other side, you have the more tactical but still explosive Mason. With the way they approach fights, Cordina has a feeling that it’ll be a good one when it happens.
“That’s a very good fight, a very good fight,” Cordina told Boxing News. “I think that’s a fight of two completely different styles.”
We’re still a long way away from that matchup actually taking place. With a considerable amount of details needing to be finalized, Cordina will want to make sure his July 5 ring return goes smoothly.
On the night, he’s set to take on Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz in his lightweight debut on the Jack Catterall-Harlem Eubank undercard. It will also be his first fight in over a year since being brutally stopped by Anthony Cacace.
Even now, Cordina still blames that loss on a difficult weight cut and overstaying his super featherweight welcome.
Still, that’s now water under the bridge. With a ton of matchups waiting on him in the lightweight division, the winner of Noakes vs. Mason is at the top of his list in terms of what he wants next. As for how he sees it playing out, Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs) is no fortune teller. He does, however, have a feeling that Noakes can make that one look easy if his head is on straight.
“I believe he can likely win that, quite comfortably as well if he gets the tactics right on the night,” Cordina revealed. “Then that’ll be a massive fight for Britain. Obviously, I’ve got to do my job but that can be a big U.K. fight.”
