Stoic and set for a Las Vegas flight to start training camp this weekend, Johnny Fisher was full of quiet confidence that he'll produce a standout showing.
It was announced today he will face David Allen (23-7-2, 18 KOs) in an immediate rematch of their Saudi showdown at London's Copper Box Arena on May 17. Allen declared the five-month turnaround - 146 days - wouldn't be enough to bridge the gap in a more conclusive outcome second time around.
Gone with the pre-fight pleasantries and jokes borne from friendly familiarity last time around, the respect between them remains but both know they have a job to do - far more impressive than last time.
Fisher (13-0, 11 KOs) admitted to subconsciously not being at his vicious, destructive best during the press conference against someone he knows well, though remains adamant history won't repeat itself as he seeks to ensure no doubt lingers between them in two months' time.
"I'm always going to be respectful and a sportsman, can't be lulled into it this time, it's two men trying to render each other unconscious and was I on that mark before? Subconsciously, probably not and paid the price. I believe I won the fight and it was closer than I wanted it to be, it won't be this time."
His trainer, Mark Tibbs, confirmed during the presser they're off to train in Las Vegas tomorrow - a familiar stomping ground for Fisher, who has joined former WBO interim heavyweight champion Joe Joyce (16-3, 15 KOs) out there in the Ismael Salas gym and elsewhere across the fight capital of the world.
Afterwards, Tibbs told The Ring how the change of scenery will suit the 25-year-old before his biggest fight yet. Fisher also confirmed he'll venture to Spain after another Stateside trip.
"His management team set it up, we'll start off there but I'm not sure how long we'll be there. I've been several times for business and boxing, all the gyms in that Vegas area are very interesting with hard sparring, it'll be a great experience for both of us - Johnny's been plenty before, it'll be a good start to the camp.
"When you're knuckling down on a serious bit of work, you've got to concentrate, can't be pulled from pillar to post - which happens where he lives in Romford, or my Essex gym - it's difficult getting through a session because of just how popular he is. When we're there, eat, sleep, train, repeat. We have some fun and downtime but focus on the work."
Although father John did, Fisher refused to engage in the whirlwind of public opinion - arguing he was fortunate to win - after being knocked down for the first time as a pro on December 21, being on unsteady legs and hurt multiple times in the second-half of their ten-round contest.
He admitted thinking about making amends for a difficult outing every night when he slept for weeks, allowing those feelings to breathe and fester before telling his dad one night at dinner that he "couldn't be a real man" if they didn't run it back.
"It will be a completely different story this time, I can fight and box, marry them together and it'll be a great fight. It was great fighting in Saudi but there's nothing like fighting in-front of the British public, the Romford Army all over the country and Europe, I can say it [crowd support] won't have an effect but it lifts me, gives a semblance of strength. One difference between us is this: I'm willing to leave it all in the ring and get flattened, Dave will retire in the corner."
