Bruce Seldon and Josh Popper evidently aren't looking for gimmies even in the early stages of their careers.
The two undefeated heavyweight prospects are scheduled to fight one another in a six-round bout Saturday night on a BoxingInsider card at Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on the outlet's YouTube channel.
Call it a calculated risk for Popper (7-0, 6 KOs) and Seldon (8-0, 6 KOs), the son of the former heavyweight champ of the same name.
“This is my biggest fight in the pros, but I don’t wanna be babied,” Popper told The Ring recently. “I know my opponent, and I know what I bring to the table. This is going to be a regular day at the office.
"I don’t think he’s close to me, and I mean that with zero disrespect. He’s a tough opponent, and he’s going to come to fight, but there’s levels.”
Seldon, whose father won the WBA heavyweight title in 1995 before losing it to Mike Tyson one year later, agrees with Popper. He’s eager to prove that Popper simply isn’t on his.
“I’m a hard hitter, I can box, I can bang, and I bring the pressure,” Seldon told The Ring. “Everything he can do, I can do better. I’m ready.”
Of course, both are a long way from becoming title contenders even though Popper is 32 and Seldon one year younger. The winner will take a solid step in the right direction.
Larry Goldberg, owner of BoxingInsider, likes the unusual matchup and expects it to be entertaining.
“This is a rare fight to make at the club level,” he told The Ring. “I know both guys are going to put on a show, and I can’t wait to watch it. The fans watching in person and those watching on YouTube are going to get a real action fight.”
