With a long-awaited showdown against Tyson Fury more likely than ever, Anthony Joshua admits that he can't help looking beyond his upcoming fight with Albania's Kristian Prenga and thinking about what the future may hold.
Just 24 hours before Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) takes on the relatively unknown Prenga (20-1, 20 KOs) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on July 25, domestic rival Fury (35-2-1, 24 KOs) is back in action himself.
The two-time heavyweight champion, now 37, will complete his own drawn out preparations for their proposed fight when meeting Polish veteran Mariusz Wach (39-13, 20 KOs) in the beach resort of Pattaya in Thailand. As long as both fighters emerge unscathed from a busy weekend, it seems certain they will finally meet later this year.
“It's the reality of my life. It’s what's in front of me,” Joshua said during an interview with DAZN. “It's impossible to shut all these amazing opportunities down.”
Back in April, he sat ringside at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Fury ended a 16-month long retirement to outbox and outpoint Arslanbek Makhmudov over 12 rounds.
Post-fight, Fury grabbed a microphone and loudly called for Joshua to meet him in the ring for a face-off.
It would have been very easy for Joshua to take the easy option, giving the fans and Fury exactly what they wanted but he chose to stay seated. He took far more from the 12 rounds of action than the post-fight histrionics.
Although Fury controlled Makhmudov from start to finish, "The Gypsy King" clearly felt that he needed some more live action before settling his long-running rivalry with Joshua and after exploring several options, has decided upon a runout against Wach.
Despite not mentioning specifics, Joshua saw plenty of ways he could beat the version of Fury who beat Makhmudov. With proper preparation, he believes it won't matter how Fury does perform when they do meet.
“It’s easy to say sitting outside, but I can see ways to beat Fury. I’m not banking on Fury, whether he's going to be the best or his worst for me to win ... I'm just confident in myself that I can beat him either way,” he said.
“I just know with the work that I'm doing, I'll beat Fury. I’m not worrying about his performance at Tottenham, how many warm-up fights he has or how good he's looking. I'm just confident in me turning up, being the man across the ring, and doing exactly what I know I'm going to do to him.”
