Oddsmakers are not favoring Chavez, who’s been in the ring with the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez and Daniel Jacobs, all of which have ended in losses. DraftKings has Paul listed as a minus-650 favorite and Chavez as a plus-450 underdog.
LOS ANGELES — It hasn't been a smooth ride for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in recent years.
The 39-year-old former middleweight champion and son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. hasn’t landed a meaningful win in more than a decade. Outside of the ring hasn’t been better, either, as Chavez Jr. entered a residential treatment program last year after being arrested and charged with felony gun possession.
Chavez (54-6-1, 34 KOs) is promising his life and career are working well in tandem as he takes on Jake Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) on June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on DAZN PPV.
“I feel very good. I feel refreshed and renewed. I haven’t taken blows to the head, so I’m a lot better than he is,” Chavez said during a press conference at Avalon Hollywood. “I need to prepare 100 percent. This is an interesting fight. It might not be easy, but I’m going to do the best I can to be the best person I am, but I think I’m going to take him.”
Paul last fought in November against a 58-year-old Mike Tyson and landed an easy yet uninspiring unanimous decision win. Chavez, meanwhile, beat former UFC fighter Uriah Hall in a six-round unanimous decision in July, months after leaving rehab.
Paul and Chavez share a common opponent in UFC legend Anderson Silva. Paul dropped Silva in 2022 and scored an eight-round unanimous decision win in Arizona. In '21, Silva beat Chavez via split decision in an eight-round fight in Mexico.
“Jake is crazy. I think he’s overrated. He hasn’t fought anybody in his life,” said Chavez. “He’s never fought anybody like me. Mike Tyson wasn’t even a fighter. He doesn’t know what he’s going to see or what to expect because he’s never seen it before. In boxing, you learn step by step, and he’s missing many.”
Chavez Sr. accompanied and supported his son on the dais as they prepared for Paul.
“I’ve never seen him train like this. He’s very focused,” said Chavez Sr. “With all due respect to Jake Paul, there is no way that Jake Paul can beat my son.
“All fights are difficult. Jake Paul is young and strong, but he’s never faced a fighter like my son. I would’ve given Mike Tyson a better fight. He didn’t throw one punch the whole fight. This time is different. This time, he’s going to get [expletive] up.”
