Chavez (55-7-1, 35 KOs) is scheduled to fight for the third time this year when he faces Jeison Troncoso (14-3, 10 KOs) on September 19 in Puebla, Mexico.

The besmirched second-generation fighter and former 160-pound titleholder has been living in Mexico after United States federal agents arrested him in July 2025 in Los Angeles for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application.

The high-profile arrest took place less than a week after Chavez suffered a unanimous decision loss against Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. Following his arrest, Chavez was deported back to Mexico and released from prison in August 2025, where he awaits trial over alleged cartel ties.

When Chavez was arrested, the United States Department of Homeland Security stated that Chavez had an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his “involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives” and that he was “believed to be an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel.”

The 40-year-old Chavez has a 10-7 record without any notable wins since 2012. Both of his fights since losing to Paul have taken place in Mexico. In April, he stopped Jhon Caicedo in the third round, three months after he knocked out Angel Sacco in four rounds.

Troncoso, his latest opponent, is a 31-year-old from Colombia who's only lost to previously-undefeated fighters. Troncoso has a win against the well-faded, multiple-time title challenger Edison Miranda in 2024, and he'll look to add another notable name to his resume when he challenges Chavez.
