Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will grace the ring for the second time this year when he faces Jhon Caicedo on April 25, the WBC announced on Wednesday.
The bout will take place at the Estadio Adolfo Lopez Mateos stadium in Reynosa, Mexico.
Chavez (55-7-1, 35 KOs), a long-faded former 160-pound titleholder, has a 9-7 record with no notable wins since 2012. On January 24, the 40-year-old Chavez stopped Angel Sacco in four rounds in Mexico. The fight was Chavez’s first since dropping a one-sided unanimous decision in a cruiserweight clash against Jake Paul in June.
Caicedo (13-1, 5 KOs), a 21-year-old from Colombia, last fought in June and suffered a third-round knockout defeat against former title challenger Avni Yildirim in Turkey.
Chavez is living in Mexico nowadays after United States federal agents arrested him in July near his Los Angeles residence for overstaying his visa and allegedly lying on a green card application. Chavez was deported back to Mexico and released from prison in August, where he’s awaiting trial over alleged cartel ties.
At the time of Chavez’s arrest last summer, the United States Department of Homeland Security stated that Chavez had an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his “involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives” and that the second-generation fighter is “believed to be an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel.”
