Justis Huni boosted his knockout-to-win ratio in a hurry.
The unbeaten 25-year-old heavyweight made quick work of South Africa's Shaun Potgeiter, whom he stopped in the second round. A barrage of punches forced the end at 0:33 of round two Wednesday evening at Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.
A mismatch on paper was treated just that way by Brisbane's Huni (12-0, 7 KOs), who is already being groomed for title contention. Potgieter (10-2, 7 KOs) was the perfect opponent for the occasion, a club-level fighter with a record glossy enough to look good on a résumé.
Huni jumped on Potgieter from the outset and never let him off the hook. It has been the preferred approach for his last three fights after he went the full ten-round distance in four consecutive outings. Potgieter did his best to absorb the power shots and, to his credit, remained upright.
It didn't discourage Huni from unloading heavy blows. A body shot paved the way for the fight-ending sequence. Potgieter was trapped in a corner, as Huni landed at will. A right uppercut followed by an overhand right upstairs was enough for referee Phil Austin to end the contest.
The win came just four weeks after Huni's previous hit. Plans for another quick turnaround were dulled, however, when it was learned that Huni tweaked his elbow. The injury was just enough to cancel hopes for a March ring appearance.
Earlier on the undercard, Teremoana Junior Teremoana remained a knockout every time out.
The 2024 Olympic quarterfinalist for Australia blasted out Osasu Otobo in just 57 seconds. A left hook was enough to floor Otobo (11-2-1, 5 KOs), to where a final right hand never had the chance to find its mark.
Teremoana (6-0, 6 KOs) has yet to go beyond the second round since turning pro in 2020. The only obstacle in his upward trajectory thus far was pausing his pro career to make a run in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Huni-Potgieter and Teremoana-Otobo both aired live on DAZN in supporting capacity to the Jai Opetaia-David Nyika Ring/IBF cruiserweight championship.
