George Kambosos Jr. criticized Richardson Hitchins for the IBF junior welterweight champion's cautious style and for saying things he doesn't believe before their 12-round, 140-pound title fight Saturday in The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
NEW YORK — George Kambosos Jr. just rolls his eyes at this point.
The former unified lightweight champion can’t believe some of the things that come out of Richardson Hitchins’ mouth. In fact, Kambosos is convinced he doesn’t even believe a lot of what he has said while trying to promote himself and Saturday's junior welterweight title fight.
Kambosos (22-3, 10 KOs) is especially suspicious of how Hitchins insists he’ll fight more than he’ll box during their 12-round bout in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The Australian contender expects Brooklyn’s Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) to use his jab, movement and defensive skill to comfortably compete from a distance because that’s the strategy that favors the IBF 140-pound champion.
Kambosos believes is that Hitchins is much more concerned with winning, even if his style displeases fans, than entertaining them.
“He’s a bit of a hypocrite,” Kambosos told The Ring. “He doesn’t really believe anything he says because he’ll say that, and it’s exactly what he was saying in the face-to-face and I’ve seen him say it [elsewhere]. But then he’ll say he’s gonna trade and not do what other guys did and fight and makes fun of other people and disrespects other people. He’s really confused.
“Being a champion now and all the pressure of having to sell the fight and all the spotlight on him, I think it’s put a lot of pressure on him and put a lot of cloudiness on his brain. The warrior he has in front of him comes to fight, comes for war every single fight — bloody, bruised, win, lose or draw comes to win and comes to fight.”
Kambosos’ face looked the way he mentioned after his career-changing, split-decision victory over Teofimo Lopez, his two 12-round, unanimous-decision defeats to Devin Haney and his 11th-round, technical knockout loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko. The Sydney native is certain Lopez, Haney and Lomachenko are all better than Hitchins, however, and that those experiences have equipped him to pull off another upset in The Theater, where he defeated Lopez in November 2021.
Hitchins called Kambosos “a bum” during their final press conference Thursday at the Garden. He also promised to become the second opponent to stop the durable Kambosos in a main event DAZN will stream globally (6:30 p.m. ET; 11:30 p.m. GMT).
Kambosos scoffed at Hitchins’ tough talk and for making hyperbolic predictions related to “taking the whole [expletive] sport over.”
“He’ll say one thing,” Kambosos said, “trying to huff and puff his chest and trying to build his name, which is not really a big name in the sport at the moment. And then he’ll go back to, ‘I’ll do whatever I’ve gotta do to win and I don’t care if it’s boring. I wanna come out pretty.’ That shows me that you’re a boxer, you’re not a fighter. You’re never gonna be a fan favorite. With me, I’m a fan favorite win, lose or draw because I put it all on the line.
“He was saying that I come out of a fight all bruised and cut up. That’s a real fighter. That’s a warrior. How can you disrespect that kinda style? If you’re disrespecting that kinda style, you’re disrespecting the greats like Arturo Gatti, Ward, Hagler, Duran. That’s who you’re disrespecting.”
