Although he was picked as a late replacement opponent for George Kambosos this Saturday on DAZN, the former unified lightweight champ has spent most of his time picking fights with everyone but him.
Richardson Hitchins, more than anyone else, has been the number one target on Kambosos’ mind. The slick-hitting former Olympian has dangled his IBF title in the Australian’s face, promising to give him a shot if he takes care of business.
Placing that red and gold belt back on his mantle would make Kambosos feel alive again. For now, he’ll sit back and watch Hitchins hold onto that title. From Kambosos’ point of view, the 27-year-old shouldn’t take his eyes off it. If he does, he’ll be looking around wondering where it went.
“Yea you're a belt holder right now but keep it warm,” said Kambosos to FightHub TV.
From head to toe, Kambosos (21-3, 10 KOs) firmly believes that Hitchins isn’t in the same league as him, but lately, he’s looked a bit shaky. Back-to-back losses to Devin Haney were forgivable but an underwhelming showing to Maxi Hughes followed by a stoppage loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko was indefensible.
Still, there was a built-in excuse for some of those performances. For the entirety of his career, Kambosos fought at 135 pounds. While he once made the weight comfortably, as he got older, squeezing down became more and more difficult. So, desperate for a reprieve, the 31-year-old has decided to head on over to the super lightweight division.
He hasn’t stepped on the scales just yet but he expects to be more hydrated, healthier, and stronger than ever before. If he is, Wyllie and possibly Hitchins, could be in a world of trouble.
‘You're gonna see me handle business and then we’re gonna have a real fun lead up.”
