Boxing fan and NBA superstar Karl-Anthony Towns was one of the many luminaries seated ringside Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York to watch Shakur Stevenson's masterclass performance against Teofimo Lopez.
By Wednesday, the New York Knicks All-Star center looked like he was in a heavyweight fight himself when, like Lopez, he suffered a nasty cut across his eye after clashing heads with Spencer Jones of the Denver Nuggets at the end of the first quarter at MSG.
Towns' jersey immediately got bloodied and his right eye needed to be bandaged, but he remained in the game to score 24 points and grab 12 rebounds to help the Knicks beat the Nuggets 134-127 in double-overtime.
"It's okay. I look like I fought Shakur Stevenson," Towns quipped during an in-game interview.
It certainly would be a sight to see how Stevenson, who stands 5-foot-8, would land a punch against Towns, 7 feet and 248 pounds.
Stevenson didn't have a problem landing on Lopez. He leaned on a sharp jab to cause a cut over Lopez's left eye and scored a landslide unanimous decision to become The Ring and WBO junior welterweight champion while headlining "The Ring 6" show.
As for Towns, he's no stranger to the sweet science, and despite the cut he should be a fixture at big fights for years to come.
In May, Towns was front and center at The Ring's Times Square card in New York wearing a hat and T-shirt that paid homage to the 1984 war between Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns.
