Future Hall of Famer Katie Taylor, who is running out of compelling foils, recently brought up the 154-pound titleholder.
Katie Taylor has checked off a lot of the boxes. She has won world titles in multiple weight classes. She has beaten some of the best fighters in the world, including rival Amanda Serrano in July to sweep their trilogy. And she has made millions of dollars.
What's next?
“I don’t know, to be honest,” the 39-year-old Irishwoman told Tru School Sports during a recent interview. "I’m waiting for a big fight that actually does excite me. I feel like I have done it all in the sport. I’m just waiting for a fight that actually excites and motivates me.”
One potential opponent who intrigues Taylor is Mikaela Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs), who recently became a unified junior middleweight titleholder at 35 with her wide unanimous decision win over Mary Spencer on October 30.
The two are a few weight classes apart, but Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) appears to be open to finding a middle ground to make their fantasy fight a reality.
“Mikaela is a fantastic fighter, and I feel like she hasn’t gotten the credit she deserves these last few years,” Taylor said. “She’s phenomenal. That would be an amazing fight; she’s a great all-around fighter. You need to be well prepared going into a fight like that.”
