ANAHEIM, California – Kenneth Sims suffered a second loss in a row, albeit competitively, when he dropped a unanimous decision against Arnold Barboza in a welterweight bout on Saturday at Honda Center.
Sims wasn’t able to nullify the equally competent and technically sound Barboza during the competitive and cagey fencing match, and was outlanded 211 to 133 and dealt with scores of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111 on the cards.
“I didn't win the fight – point blank, period. But 120-108 is crazy,” Sims said post-fight. “I don't like making excuses. If you watch me, you know that wasn't me. My right leg was cramping after the second round. Once it stopped cramping, my leg felt like a brick. It was heavy. But congratulations to Arnold. He fought a great fight.
“I could have done everything better. But I can't be too down on myself because I was physically limited. I have to get better, and do better, and be smarter. I've been doing this my whole life, so I know the feelings that come with it.”
Sims (22-4, 8 KOs) came into the clash off a hard-fought majority decision defeat in August against Oscar Duarte at 140 pounds. The loss at the time stopped a nine-fight winning streak.
Although Sims has fought on and off at the welterweight limit throughout the years, he emphasized that the most optimal version of himself operates as a junior welterweight.
“I'm a 140-pounder, so I'm going to go back to where I am best at,” said Sims. “I don't know if [fighting at 147] played a factor or not but I just know that I feel best at 140, as I have shown in my fights.”
