An ESPN main event between Keyshawn Davis and Edwin De Los Santos was canceled Friday night because the former came in 4.3 pounds overweight for their 12-round lightweight title fight Saturday night at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia.
NORFOLK, Virginia — Keyshawn Davis cost himself the WBO lightweight title and a seven-figure purse by coming in 4.3 pounds overweight Friday afternoon.
Sampson Lewkowicz, Edwin De Los Santos’ promoter, told The Ring on Friday night that he and Humberto Betancourt, trainer and manager, decided not to allow their fighter to go through with their 12-round main event Saturday night at Scope Arena in Davis’ hometown.
Lewkowicz and Carl Moretti, Davis’ promotional representative, spent several hours negotiating a substantial financial penalty to pay De Los Santos and restrictions for a second-day weigh-in. Lewkowicz and Betancourt, however, determined De Los Santos shouldn’t fight an opponent so much heavier than him.
Davis, who officially weighed 139.3 pounds, had agreed to weigh no more than 149½ pounds at a second-day weigh-in at 9 a.m. Saturday before their main event was called off. De Los Santos would’ve been eligible to win the WBO lightweight title that was stripped from Davis if they moved forward with their bout because he met his contractual obligation by weighing 134.7 pounds.
The Ring has confirmed that Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., Davis’ promoter, is still going to pay De Los Santos his entire purse, believed to be approximately $400,000. ESPN.com first reported that Davis-De Los Santos was canceled.
Abdullah Mason (18-0, 16 KOs), a left-handed lightweight contender from Cleveland, Ohio, and Namibia’s Jeremia Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) have been elevated from the co-feature of ESPN’s doubleheader to the main event.
Davis’ older brother, southpaw Kelvin Davis (15-0, 8 KOs), and Nahir Albright (16-2, 7 KOs, 1 NC), of Sicklerville, New Jersey, will now meet in ESPN’s 10-round co-feature. Kelvin Davis and Albright were initially scheduled to box in the last fight on the non-televised portion of the undercard.
ESPN’s two-bout broadcast will start at 10 p.m. ET in the United States and 3 a.m. GMT in the United Kingdom.
