He's looking for a fight but he isn’t willing to get in there with anyone. Commey hasn’t officially fought since 2023, but he believes he’s earned the right to face a name.
He’s walked the road of a top contender and a bona-fide champion. But after a few setbacks, the boxing world was ready to bury Richard Commey.
The one-time champ, however, isn't done yet.
He's looking for a fight but he isn’t willing to get in there with anyone. Commey hasn’t officially fought since 2023, but he believes he’s earned the right to face a name.
Keyshawn Davis counts as one.
Leading up to June 7, Davis appeared locked in on defending his WBO lightweight title. He was seemingly on top of the world and was looking forward to his Norfolk, Virginia, homecoming. So were his fans.
At this point, nevertheless, we all know the story. Davis (13-0, 9 KOs) blew weight by 4.3 pounds and subsequently lost his belt and his main event slot. His excuse didn’t placate his fanbase but it made sense. Davis has always been big for the weight, so instead of continuing to kill himself on the scales he moved up and on.
Heading on over to 140 pounds is music to Commey’s career. Although his current form isn’t something to brag about, he still believes he can compete with a fighter like Davis.
“If I’m in my top shape, he’s gonna have a long night,” Commey said to The Ring while smiling from ear to ear.
A matchup with Davis is a long shot. Commey (30-5-1, 27 KOs) isn’t naive. He has just one win since 2019 and hasn’t held a world title in six years.
The first step on his road to getting his name back out there is to simply fight. And while nothing appears imminent, he’s hoping to grab a handful of ring appearances in the next six months.
“I’m ready,” Commey said. “My weight is down, I’m in shape, I’m ready. I know it may not be realistic, but I would love to get two or three fights this year.”
