Khalil Coe continued to outdo himself, but not in a good way.
Eddie Hearn, his promoter, was expecting a focused and motivated Coe (11-1-1, 8 KOs) in an important fight against Jesse Hart on the Raymond Muratalla-Andy Cruz card last weekend. Instead, the fringe light heavyweight contender left his handler exasperated, coming in 7.8 pounds over the 175-pound limit for the fight.
Hart agreed to go through with the fight after Coe paid a financial penalty. Coe eked out a majority decision victory, but Hearn still laid into his fighter afterward.
“Missing the weight was inexcusable,” he told several reporters. “I’ve got a reputation of dying on a hill for my fighters. I’ll back them all the way. But I can’t. I would be a fool for trying to make an excuse for that. He’s missed weight about four, five times now in his career. You can make a misjudgment by half a pound or a pound but not by eight pounds. It’s just disgraceful.”
Then there was Coe's performance. He landed 54 punches in the 10-round fight (compared to 92 for Hart), according to CompuBox. That's barely showing up.
Coe obviously was fortunate to emerge with a 96-92, 95-93 and 94-94 victory, after which he was all smiles as he slinked out of Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
Hearn wasn't smiling.
“If you’re going to miss weight like that and have all of that weight advantage, you have to go out there and look good,” Hearn said. “But there was no urgency.”
