Say what you want about Gervonta Davis but most consider him a great fighter. Lamont Roach, by and large, knows exactly what he’s up against.
Well before he was told that Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) would be next up, Roach studied him from a distance. Now, with his shot in the spotlight coming up in just under two months, Roach promised to avoid the same mistakes as those who came before him.
To a certain extent, Davis has been chastised for his opponent selection. Roach though, doesn’t view it as weak opposition making Davis look good. What it comes down to is simple: put the Baltimore native in uneasy situations if you want success.
“They don’t give him too much to worry about,” explained Roach on MillCity Boxing. “He’s super comfortable in there with a lot of people.”
Unnerved and on edge by Davis’ highlight reel of knockouts is essentially his biggest key to victory. Frank Martin, Davis’ only fight in 2024, fell victim to those circumstances from Roach’s point of view.
The Ring’s No. 4 ranked junior lightweight plans on being stoic when they meet up in Brooklyn, New York and has no intentions of resembling a punching bag. Davis may have dog-walked practically everyone who stood across the ring from him but Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) isn’t worried about the concussive power or bright lights.
No, Roach won’t run to the middle of the ring with his hands and tell Davis to take his best shot but he will fight fire with fire when need be.
“They are probably afraid or super cautious. Too cautious. Giving him too much respect. You give a puncher his respect for sure but you keep him honest, you stay true to your game plan, and you work how you supposed to work. You not supposed to be in there scared.”
