Lamont Roach was told exactly how things would play out.

He listened to fans discuss how vicious he would get stopped. He paid attention to media pundits argue over what round he would get knocked out. He also noticed the numerous warnings from trainers surrounding the power of Gervonta Davis.

Roach wasn’t oblivious to what he was facing but he somewhat viewed Davis’ power as extraneous. Sure he’s sent countless opponents to the abyss but Roach is no punk. Not only was he confident in his skills, but he was also sure in his ability to take a shot.

“I told y’all I got a chin,” Roach told a group of reporters.

To prove that you can take a punch, well, you have to actually take them. Roach, time and time again this past weekend, took several flush shots to the jaw but was never wobbled. He also never took a step back.

His toughness, along with the work he was putting in all night, led to a majority decision draw. Looking back, Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) doesn’t agree with the three judges sitting ringside. Nevertheless, he’s hoping that an immediate rematch will take place. Davis, at the post-fight podium, revealed that a rematch with Roach will happen but will likely take place next year.

That may have been just a heat of the moment thing though. After going back and forth with Roach over social media recently, Davis said “I’m pushing for the rematch,” something that’s music to the ears of Roach.

With a sequel inching a bit closer, Roach looks back at the comments his doubters made about Davis’ power. Usually, once The Ring’s No. 1 ranked lightweight lands on the money, his opponents fold. For Roach, however, his reaction was the complete opposite.

“Once I took his best shot, I said oh yeah, it’s time to go.”
