Lee McGregor finally caught a break in his hard-luck career.
The 27-year-old Scotsman earned a ten-round, unanimous decision over England's Isaac Lowe. Scores were 96-92, 97-91 and 97-91 for McGregor in their physical and bloody affair Saturday at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The bout served in supporting capacity to the Oleksandr Usyk-Tyson Fury RING/unified heavyweight championship rematch. Lowe is a member of Fury's camp.
Both fighters set a fast pace at the outset, though it quickly fizzled. Lowe constantly charged forward, determined to live up to the pre-fight suggestion of a true grudge match.
McGregor was the considerably more polished of the two, and managed to land the more telling blows during the majority of their exchanges.
Action considerably slowed from the opening three minutes, a pace which greatly favored McGregor.
Lowe showed a better chin on this occasion than in knockout defeats to Luis Lopez and Nick Ball, before both went on to win featherweight belts.
The Morecambe-based fringe contender wasn't in search of a moral victory, as he returned to a hectic pace in the third. McGregor was prepared and landed clean counters. His patience was telling, whereas Lowe unnecessarily expended energy.
The bout quickly devolved into a mess, complete with headbutts, cuts and mouthpiece issues.
Lowe was cut over both eyes, and struggled to keep his gumshield inserted. He lost two points for the latter infraction, one each in rounds nine and ten—ironically, two rounds he won on all three scorecards.
A final malfunction came late in the tenth, after the second point deduction. McGregor charged in, and his lowered shoulder caught Lowe under the chin. His mouthpiece once again ejected, though referee Lee Every just let them fight.
McGregor advanced to 15-1-1 (11 KOs) with the win, his third straight. His career progress was slowed by injuries and inactivity but he managed a three-win 2024 campaign.
Lowe fell to 25-2-3 (8 KOs), which snapped a four-fight win streak.
