Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will meet in their much anticipated heavyweight title rematch on December 21 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as the Ukrainian attempts to defend his Ring Magazine, WBC, WBO, and WBA titles against The Ring's No. 1 rated contender.
Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) beat Fury (34-1-1) via split decision on May 18 to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years. Fury started the fight strong against the undersized Usyk but faded late after he was knocked down in the ninth round. Usyk landed 170 of 407 of his punches while Fury countered with 157 of 496 of his own. Two judges awarded Usyk the fight via scores 115-112 and 114-113 while a third judge had it 114-113 in favor of Fury.
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis met with the media to offer his input on the rematch.
“It’s going to be a tough fight for both guys. It’s going to be mentally tough. It’s going to be physically tough. They’re going to push each other on a mental basis. They’re going to push each other physically. Both guys want to win this fight.
“I think it’s going to be a banger. It’s going to be a serious fight. One guy was more serious than the other guy. You could say Fury lost that fight and Usyk won it. Now it’s a situation where they’re having another fight. Fury has to win that fight so he’s going to be more focused. He’s going to put a little bit more weight on to get through this fight. And he’s a lot more serious.
“Usyk is a mover, he’s hard to hit and he knows what to do. He’ll punch with you for a second and then he’s out of range. It’s a tit for tat. Both guys are going to be using their intelligence, their ring IQ. Fury’s got the size; he moves well. He needs to get the jab going.
“I like Tyson with a little bit more weight. Maybe he’ll come in with more weight this time. He’s always a good fighter even with weight on and with weight he can push the little guy back. There’s a lot of different things that Fury can do to unhinge Usyk and make it a harder fight for him to win.”
