Lewis Edmondson is looking forward to uncovering some previously unseen layers to his game when he fights Oluwatosin Kejawa on Saturday night.
Last October, Edmondson, 10-0 (3 KOs), defied his underdog status and claimed the vacant British and Commonwealth light heavyweight titles with a tight, majority decision victory over former European champion, Dan Azeez.
Winning the belts has opened up plenty of avenues to future success.
On Saturday night, Southampton’s Edmondson makes his first defence of the Commonwealth title against Bristol-based Nigerian, Kejawa, 11-0 (7 KOs), in Bournemouth.
TNT Sports will televise the show which is headlined by the vacant European junior lightweight title fight between Ryan Garner, 16-0 (8 KOs), and Salvador Jimenez, 14-0-1 (6 KOs).
Although Britain has an established set of light heavyweights vying for world honours, there is also a group of hungry fighters in just behind them, all desperate for their chance to separate themselves from the domestic pack and join the big names.
Beating Azeez for the British and Commonwealth titles moved Edmondson to the head of that group and ensured that all roads run through the 29 year-old from Southampton.
The unbeaten Ezra Taylor, 10-0 (7 KOs), has been the fighter shouting Edmondson’s name the loudest and whilst they have never met, the two have developed a heated rivalry.
Taylor will be part of Queensberry’s broadcast team for Friday’s weigh in and should be in attendance in Bournemouth on Saturday night. The 30 year-old from Nottingham is all but certain to create some noise and attempt to secure himself a shot at Edmondson’s belts.
Edmondson is looking forward to finally looking Taylor in the eye but stated that he is just one of a number of potential future opponents.
“It's a great fight and, yeah, it's one I believe maybe that could happen but we're in a good position at the minute and there's a lot of other fights that could happen,” he told Queensberry at Wednesday evening’s press conference.
“We want the biggest names and the biggest fights possible so whoever my manager wants me to fight, I’ll fight and whatever makes sense I'll fight.
“Ezra Taylor is a name there. Zach Parker is a name there. The winner of Liam Cameron and Ben Whitaker, that’s there. We’ve got the belts . We’re in the driving seat.”
Edmondson is 29 years old and knew that he must win the Azeez fight to avoid finding himself at the back of a lengthening queue.
Beating the Londoner released a tonne of pressure from his shoulders and Edmondson insists that it also released the shackles. He may have a number of rivals vying for a shot at his titles but, this weekend, he gets the chance to reiterate that he is the man to beat and is promising to show exactly what he is capable of against the heavy handed but relatively unknown Kejawa.
“[There’s] a big, big performance coming,” he said. “What people don't see is that I can box many ways, do different things and only the people that know, know. Watching that Dan Azeez fight, you’ve got to box Dan a certain way away and a win's a win.
“You're going to see layers to my game on Saturday. You’re going to see all different stuff going on.
