Liam Davies believes that his next fight could be against former British and Commonwealth featherweight champion, Zak Miller.
Davies (18-1, 9 KOs) and Miller (17-1, 3 KOs) had been due to box on Queensberry’s recent Magnificent Seven show at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena.
A biceps injury ruled Miller out of the fight but Davies was kept on the bill, producing one of the most complete performances of his career to break down and stop Italy’s Francesco Grandelli in six rounds. The win earned the 30-year-old from Donington the European featherweight title, making him a two-weight European titleholder.
Davies is ranked highly by the WBC, IBF and WBO but the win over Grandelli ended a long period of inactivity and although, in an ideal world, Davies would step directly onto the world stage, he clearly wants to stay busy.
After Nathaniel Collins’ recent defeat to Cristobal Lorente, the winner of a fight between Davies and Miller would position themselves just behind former WBA champion, Nick Ball, at the top of the British featherweight rankings and in line for a major opportunity.
“I can fight the man that keeps calling me out, do you know what I mean, from Manchester,” Davies told Queensberry. “I feel like I'm a level above. I keep saying it but I feel like if you know your boxing and you watch my last fight, you can see it.
“Zak Miller is obviously a good boxer and hoping to get in my position. If that fight comes, I'll be damn right sure to remind him he's got no chance.”
Miller, 29, was heartbroken to have to withdraw from the initial date but has stayed in the gym and is nearing a return to full fitness. He quickly entered the conversation and made his own thoughts clear.
“Let’s make it happen,” he said.
