After years of slogging away on the small hall circuit, the former Commonwealth junior middleweight champion thought such an explosive victory would propel him onto bigger and better things.

Although it did not quite work out that way, one particular spectator in the Saudi Arabian capital that night was about to hand Greene a chance to change his life away from boxing.

Health problems meant he was unable to capitalize on the momentum gained from dispatching McCann on DAZN and he has managed to box just once since that stoppage victory over Dzmitry Atrokhau (16-36, 7 KOs) 19 months later.

However, he received the opportunity for a surprise career change and entered the world of executive protection.

“I do a few things these days,” Greene tells The Ring. “But the main one that I'm trying to build is private security, like personal bodyguards.

“My stepfather has been in the business for a long time and he phoned me up one day and said one of the people who watched my fight in Saudi, who was actually there on the night, wants to know if you’ve got a license to do it, too. So I jumped on a course to get my license and went from there.”

Given the destructive and clinical nature of his win over McGann, it is no surprise that Greene was immediately earmarked as a potential bodyguard.

“My stepfather’s in with the family,” he says. “I can’t name them for obvious reasons. ... Anyway he told them that I have my license and that there’s not really a place I wouldn’t go with them.

“With that, my phone rings and I ended up doing some really mad jobs. I did some work in Saudi and then with the Americans when Donald Trump came over to the UK with one of Bill Clinton’s former bodyguards.”

Such work has kept Greene busy while his boxing career has stagnated, but he has been handed the chance to breathe new life into it by Zuffa Boxing.

The 34-year-old, who is happy to fight at 154 or 160 pounds, has signed a three-fight deal with the promotional company which kicks off in Dublin on Saturday night. Greene will face Daniel Buciuc at 3Arena on the undercard of the event headlined by the world middleweight title fight between Aaron McKenna and Etinosa Oliha.

Greene admits he thought he might never return to boxing, given a serious illness and a new security job that often required him to leave the country. But he knew there was always a desire to return and build on that victory over McGann.

“I remember being out there in Saudi for that fight,” he says. “And when I listened to people saying things like ‘McGann's going to do Louis in four rounds’ and stuff like that I remember thinking that these people just ain't got a clue.

“And then when I got the job done in that style I thought, ‘Well, that's me. I'm going to be rich. I’m going to be loaded, my kids are going to be set up.’

“So when it went the other way, I was raging. So I weighed it up, whether I needed boxing any more, and then you get that burning feeling inside you where you think ‘I need to have a punch up.’

“Basically, I’ve got that.”

The reality is, without his win over McGann, his new profession might never have presented itself. Now he is happy to be a bodyguard by day and a boxer by night.

“It’s weird how life works sometimes,” he says. “Very weird. The last couple of years, all the way up until now as I sit here in this hotel now in Dublin, life has been chaotic.

“It's mad but I enjoy it because it's like an adrenaline rush. I don't know what I'm going to be doing in the morning. I could be here, there and everywhere. But I know what I’m doing on Saturday night and I’m looking forward to getting back in there and doing what I love, and that’s fighting.”
