Tiger Johnson dreamed of returning home to fight in his hometown of Cleveland since he was a kid.
It ended with him getting his hand raised, beating Christopher Guerrero by unanimous decision in a battle of undefeated welterweights on Saturday at Wolstein Center. The bout was part of the inaugural rendition of “The Fight” series on DAZN and TNT.
The judges’ scorecards reflected the one-sided nature of the 10-round matchup, as Brian Kennedy had it 100-92 while Warren Glen and Antoine Bell scored it 99-91. Afterwards, he called for a bout with Devin Haney (33-0-1, 15 KOs), who is the WBO welterweight champion and The Ring’s No. 1 welterweight and No. 8 pound-for-pound.
Johnson entered ranked No. 10 by the WBO and No. 14 by the IBF.
Johnson (18-0, 8 KOs), who was fighting for the first time with renowned Brian “BoMac” McIntyre as his trainer, established his jab early. often and landed the much sharper punches. The jab paved the way for the 2020 U.S. Olympian to land the sharper punches.
Guerrero (16-1, 9 KOs), of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, and now based out of Montreal, was content to move and fight in spots. That made for a ho-hum action that picked up in spots but mostly followed the same pattern every round. The moments were few and far between, though, as Guerrero’s best moment came late in the fourth round when he landed a flush right hand that led to Johnson holding and fighting on his back foot.
Johnson let his straight right hand go more in the second half of the fight, fought more aggressively and took full control as a result. He did some of his best work in the seventh and eighth rounds when he landed eye-catching rights and left hooks to the body that forced Guerrero to go on the defensive.
Johnson stayed on the offensive in the final round, landing blistering rights and solid body shots, but Guerrero was never in serious trouble.
Davis stays undefeated but unimpressive
Deric “Scooter” Davis withstood a tough test from Carlos Ramos to win a unanimous decision in the opening fight on the DAZN and TNT broadcast.
The judges had it 78-74 twice and 77-75 for Davis (12-0, 10 KOs). The decision victory was Davis’ second in a row after 10 straight knockouts.
Ramos (18-5-1, 10 KOs), a crafty southpaw from Ecuador who trains out of Madrid, Spain, gave Davis fits with his ability to make him miss and land left hands. Davis was pressuring Ramos throughout the fight, but struggled to cut off the ring. When Davis was able to land, he did some of his best work to the body
Ultimately, Davis being on the front foot and landing the harder shots when he was able to hit the target outweighed Ramos’ movement and outlanding the 23-year-old from Washington, D.C. Ramos had a 93-91 edge in punches landed, according to the broadcast.
  • Ibrahim Mason (3-0, 3 KOs) def. Erik Hanley (1-3, 1 KO) by second-round TKO
  • Abdurrahman Mason (3-0, 2 KOs) def. Alvaro Huizar Cabral (1-1) by unanimous decision
DAZN is streaming “The Fight” to its international subscribers, while TNT will give the show a wider reach by airing it on cable across the United States.
