Floyd Mayweather is pumping the brakes on a scheduled rematch against Manny Pacquiao, which was announced more than a month ago by Netflix for September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Mayweather on Saturday in Las Vegas spoke with reporters for the first time since the streaming service announced on February 23 that the fight between the generational greats would be a professional bout.
"As of right now, we don't know exactly where the fight is going to be at," said Mayweather. "We don't know the location of the fight. The Sphere is one of the places that they talked about. So, we don't know if it's a hundred percent going to be there. And this is not actually a fight, it's an exhibition. We're going to do it again and hopefully entertain the people.
"It's an exhibition, so we're both winners. I mean, we just want to go out there and entertain the people and put on a good show."
Mayweather hasn’t fought professionally since 2017 and appears inclined to make 2026 the year of the exhibition. The 49-year-old has scheduled exhibitions against Mike Tyson in the Congo and kickboxer Mike Zambidis in Greece. However, firm dates have not been confirmed for either attraction.
“I said, why not go out and have a little fun, entertain, and put on some exhibitions, and that's what I am doing,” said Mayweather. "I never really took any abuse in the sport of boxing. I'm still extremely healthy and work out every day.”
It appears Mayweather has had a change of heart about his future after announcing on February 20 that he’d be returning to fight as a professional.
“I still have what it takes to set more records in the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said in a statement last month. “From my upcoming Mike Tyson event to my next professional fight afterwards, no one will generate a bigger gate, have a larger global broadcast audience and generate more money with each event, than my events.”
Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) beat Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) by unanimous decision in 2015 in a bout that was a blockbuster success, but failed to live up to the massive expectations. Manouk Akopyan is The Ring’s lead writer. Follow him on X and Instagram: @ManoukAkopyan.
