Vito Mielnicki grew up attending fights at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City with his father.
Now, he has a win at the venue.
Mielnicki defeated previously unbeaten Omar Huerta by unanimous decision in a 10-round middleweight bout in the main event of a ProBox card on Saturday. Mielnicki won by shutout 100-90 on two of the three judges’ scorecards and 99-91 on the other.
Mielnicki (23-1, 13 KOs) has won 15 of his last 16 fights, with the lone exception being a no-contest against Connor Coyle last year. The 23-year-old from Belleville, New Jersey, entered the fight ranked No. 5 by the WBO and No. 9 by the IBF and WBC.
It was a workmanlike performance for Mielnicki. He was the aggressor and threw punches in combinations as Huerta (15-1-1, 13 KOs), who was making his U.S. debut, largely kept his back along the ropes.
Mielnicki had success going to the head and body and countering Huerta of San Diego. Huerta, 30, didn’t necessarily force the issue to try to shift the fight in his favor.
Mielnicki outlanded him 175-60, including 67 to the body.
