Former WBC junior lightweight titlist Miguel Berchelt will snap a near year long hiatus when he takes on experienced journeyman Edixon Perez on Saturday in Reynosa, Mexico.
Former WBC junior lightweight titlist Miguel Berchelt will snap a near year long hiatus when he takes on experienced journeyman Edixon Perez on Saturday in Reynosa, Mexico.
The 33-year-old is happy and motivated to be back in action.
"I don't know very much about Edixon Perez, but I am ready to be spectacular as always on my return to the ring," Berchelt (41-3, 36 KOs) told The Ring through an interpreter. "I want to do a great show for the people of Reynosa."
Berchelt could have returned earlier but didn't feel it was the right time and waited until the Perez (30-13-1, 24 KOs) opportunity came his way.
"I had some offers before, but I am at a point in my career that I want to pick my fights and this one motivated me above all other things," he said.
"I feel that I can fight against the best lightweights, but I need to have the right offer to do that kind of fight."
Berchelt lost his WBC 130-pound title to Oscar Valdez (KO 10) in February 2021.
That prompted a move up to lightweight where he was upset by Jeremia Nakathila (RTD 6) 13 months later. He has since returned with three wins.
Despite those defeats, he maintains that enjoys boxing and still has a few chapters to write before he hangs up his gloves.
"At the moment, I am only concentrating on my next fight," he said. "I am happy to fight, and I still feel the love of the fans.
"Hopefully after this fight it doesn't take so long to fight again."
Berchelt's long-time confidant Mario Abraham believes there are still challenges out there for his fighter but won't throw him to the wolves.
"I think Miguel has had a long and successful career with 36 knockouts in 44 fights, 8 world championship fights with seven wins," said Abraham. "His last and next fight is in Mexico, and he is happy doing his fights.
"We have had offers to fight in America and other countries, but we decided together the offers were not enough to take that kind of risk."
