Oscar Collazo is conquering boxing’s lightest weight class with ease.
The unified minimumweight crown holder became a world champion in just his seventh career contest by crushing Melvin Jerusalem in 2023 via knockout for the WBO title and followed that prolific performance in November by stopping Thammanoon Niyomtrong (Knockout CP Freshmart) for The Ring and WBA titles.
The 105-pound kingpin Collazo (11-0, 8 KOs) will defend his trio of titles on Saturday when he faces Edwin Cano (13-2-1, 4 KOs) in Cancun, Mexico on the undercard of the William Zepeda vs. Tevin Farmer fight.
“This fight truly has the makings to steal the show,” Golden Boy Promotions chief Oscar De La Hoya said during a press conference on Thursday. “Oscar Collazo is such a trooper. His work ethic, his demeanor, everything about him writes and spells 'champion.' Oscar Collazo is probably one the purest, best boxers on the planet.”
Collazo, a 28-year-old from Villalba, Puerto Rico, is co-promoted by Hall of Fame fighter and countryman Miguel Cotto. The minimumweight division was also the longtime home for one of Collazo’s mentors in Hall of Fame fighter and fellow Puerto Rican Ivan Calderon.
Callazo is hoping to make his compatriots proud by besting the Mexican Cano on enemy territory, chase for the undisputed title soon afterward, and then step up to conquer a new weight class.
"It is a great rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico,” Collazo said during a media workout. “This fight is just another one for the list. With Cano in Mexico with all his fans, they're all out there waiting for me. It is going to be a great show for the Puerto Rico and Mexican fans out there.
“As always, I am giving 150 percent in this camp … I've done over 130 rounds of sparring during this camp. It's been a very strategic camp. I'm feeling good.
"My opponent is a good fighter. He is ranked No. 3 by the WBO. He wants to be a world champion like everyone else. This is my fifth title defense, and a lot of people have tried to dethrone me, so this won't be the exception. Cano is a hell of a fighter, but this is my time.”
