Eddie Hearn believes that Conor Benn is primed to produce an improved, mature performance when he fights Chris Eubank Jr. on Saturday night.
Eubank and Benn will return to London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for their eagerly awaited rematch. The event will be broadcast on DAZN Pay-per-View.
As well as the weight of history created by their fathers' famous rivalry, Benn walked to the ring for the first fight shouldering the controversy and doubt of the two failed VADA drug tests which prevented the fight from happening back in October of 2022. He was also making his middleweight debut after spending the majority of his career campaigning at 147 pounds.
The numerous sub plots and storylines raised interest and intrigue around the fight to fever pitch but they also overshadowed the fact that Eubank represented an enormous step up in competition for the 29-year-old. A step he would make in front of around 60,000 fans and an enormous television audience.
When Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) arrived in London ahead of the first fight he was stepping into the unknown. This time around, he knows exactly what to expect and his promoter, Hearn, is pleased with his fighter’s demeanour.
“I love what I see. Totally different this time,” he said at Tuesday’s Grand Arrivals.
“At this point last [fight] week, we were keeping him calm. He was definitely nervous going into the fight. We probably underestimated the magnitude of the event.
“The event itself was so special. The fight was so special and I think as a young fighter, what he would have learned from that night and how he would improve will come to light on Saturday night.
“I think we're going to get another tremendous spectacle. Both these guys are tremendously tough. Both these guys won't give an inch. Both these guys are desperate to win and that's why you're going to get another classic on Saturday night.”
Once the first fight started, Benn didn’t have time to think about anything other than the man in front of him.
A fight broke out from the opening bell and Eubank provided Benn with his first real resistance since the unheralded Cedric Peynaud dumped him on the canvas twice in the opening round of an early career learning fight back in 2017.
Although he would eventually suffer the first defeat of his career, Benn ticked plenty of boxes.
He found ways to land frequently on a long established world level fighter who is is ranked at No. 3 by The Ring and his chin held up under some heavy fire from a naturally bigger man.
Eventually, Eubank proved to be just a touch too good, too experienced and too big and ground out a unanimous decision victory.
Hearn insists that the events of April 26 have helped Benn to become a better, hungrier fighter.
“What I see from Conor Benn this time is a mature fighter. Someone who's had that experience now. The body looks completely different up at 160 pounds and that was the first tough fight he's been in and he wants more,” Hearn said.
“He's got so much more in the tank. His tank's nowhere near empty. The trenches have only just been visited for the first time. He wants more trenches. He wants more pain. He wants more volatility. And he's ready to do whatever it takes to win on Saturday night.
“You've got two warriors in there ready to put it on the line. You're going to see another classic fight.”
Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn II will headline "The Ring: Unfinished Business" and stream live on DAZN PPV from 11.45am ET/4.45pm GMT.
