So far, Moses Itauma has looked every inch a future heavyweight champion but on Saturday night, we may find out more about the 19 year-old southpaw than we have in his previous ten fights combined.
So far, Moses Itauma has looked every inch a future heavyweight champion but on Saturday night, we may find out more about the 19 year-old southpaw than we have in his previous ten fights combined.
Demsey McKean, 22-1 (14 KOs), isn’t an unknown fighter who has been hand picked to make Itauma look spectacular, neither is he a worn down former champion who has been flown to Saudi Arabia to give the heavyweight prodigy rounds. The tough Australian still has plenty of ambition of his own and will be doing everything in his power to win when he and Itauma fight on the undercard of the unified heavyweight title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.
McKean believes that the fight will be a tear up and that he hits harder than the Londoner.
“It don’t matter. Even if he does it harder than me, what's the whole point of having a having a good punch and not land it?” Itauma said when he and McKean spoke during their DAZN ‘Face Off’ show. “You’ve got to land it. Do you get what I mean so it doesn't matter if you hit harder than me, doesn't matter if you got better chin. Doesn’t matter all that”
Itauma hasn’t yet slipped into the safety first habit of reeling out P.R minded cliches. Neither does he feel the need to create unnecessary drama to sell a fight.

He carries himself and talks with the laid back, ultra confident manner of somebody who hasn’t yet been given any reason to think too deeply about his future opponents. So far, boxing has been a pretty simple equation for Itauma. As an amateur, in the gym or in the professional ring, nobody has been able to pose him a problem worth worrying about.
After brushing aside the question about whether he or Demsey hits harder, he handled the debate about who has the better chin in much the same fashion.
“He probably does. I ain't going to lie, you took that shot well,” he said referencing a right hand McKean took from Filip Hrgovic during a stoppage loss to the Croatian last August.
“You probably have got a better chin. My chin hasn’t been tested. I don't want to ever be tested. I don't want you to ever ask me that question. I’ll be like, ‘Yeah I got a better chin than him’ because that's not something that's not something you should be applauded for. saying you should be
“People that get applauded for having good chins are just dummies. Like, why? Are you a punch bag? Do you want to get hit?”
On Saturday night, Itauma will face the toughest task of his short professional career on the biggest stage he has ever walked on but although he acknowledges that - on paper at least - McKean represents the hardest challenge of his career, he is approaching the fight with the same matter of a fact perspective he has his ten previous fights.
Whatever McKean brings to the table, Itauma is certain that he will find a way to win.
“Demsey could hit harder. Demsey could have a better chin. Demsey could be quicker, whatever. But can you use them attributes?” he said. “That’s the real question and, OK, let's say you can use the attributes. Can you use them against me?
“Have you ever seen someone that boxes like me? I don't think so.”
