Armando Resendiz and Jaime Munguia are in the process of finalizing a deal to meet May 2 in Las Vegas, sources confirmed to The Ring.
Resendiz was closing in on a deal to defend his WBA super middleweight title against Jermall Charlo, who is now unavailable, per sources. The all-Mexican title fight will take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend, on the undercard of David Benavidez-Zurdo Ramirez at T-Mobile Arena.
Resendiz won the WBA’s secondary title with a convincing decision win over Caleb Plant in May. His victory earned him The Ring’s “Upset of the Year” award for 2025.
Mexico’s Resendiz, The Ring’s No. 6 contender at 168 pounds, was elevated to full champion after former undisputed champ Terence Crawford retired in December. Resendiz, 27, shared that May card with Charlo, who stopped Thomas LaManna in the sixth round of the co-feature.
Charlo and Plant were featured in the main event and co-main event as a way to create hype and give them tune-up bouts for an expected showdown that was in the works for years. Instead, Resendiz spoiled those plans and was in talks to fight Charlo instead.
But now it will be Resendiz and Munguia, who will look to become a champion in a second division.
Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) hasn’t competed since a point win over Bruno Surace in a rematch May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Munguia tested positive for a banned substance afterward, but the win was never overturned.
That victory avenged a major upset knockout loss to Surace in December 2024.
For Charlo, it’s another missed opportunity.
The 35-year-old former WBC middleweight and IBF junior middleweight champ is the twin brother of fellow former champion Jermell.
Jermall once was in contention for pound-for-pound recognition. But that was years ago, before he was plagued by inactivity and issues outside the ring.
Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) has fought just twice since May 2021.
Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) has won two fights since an 8th-round, technical-knockout loss to Elijah Garcia in September 2023.
