Few boxers have been as synonymous with fighting on Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day weekend as Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez.
On Cinco de Mayo, we look at a mythical matchup between the two.
De La Hoya, a 2014 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, was a six-division world champion. He notched victories over fellow Hall of Famers Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker and Arturo Gatti. De La Hoya also beat a bevy of former world champions, including Ike Quartey, Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga.
Alvarez will eventually join De La Hoya in Canasota, once all is said and done. He is also a four-division champion whose resume includes wins over Miguel Cotto, Sergey Kovalev, Daniel Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin twice. The 35-year-old is also a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion.
Here’s a look at the CompuBox stats from their time at 154 pounds.
De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) from eight fights at junior middleweight:
  • 20.7 average punches landed per round
  • 55.3 average punches thrown per round
  • 9.4 average jabs landed per round
  • 7.1 average jabs thrown per round
  • 11.3 average power punches landed per round
  • 28.2 average power punches thrown per round
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) from 17 fights at junior middleweight:
  • 18.4 average punches landed per round
  • 47.6 average punches thrown per round
  • 4.8 average jabs landed per round
  • 19.6 average jabs thrown per round
  • 13.7 average power punches landed per round
  • 27.9 average power punches thrown per round
De La Hoya’s volume and jab versus Alvarez’s ability to counterpunch and be efficient with his offense would likely dictate this mythical matchup. Statistically, Canelo was the better fighter defensively, as opponents landed 30.3 percent of their power punches compared to 40.7 percent for De La Hoya.
