The unstoppable force versus the immovable object is a phrase often used to depict the magnitude of a fight or sporting event.
But what happens when two immovable objects clash? On the 41st anniversary of Marvelous Marvin Hagler’s third-round knockout of Thomas Hearns in one of the best fights you’ll ever see, we look at a mythical matchup between him and fellow former middleweight champion Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin.
The paths Hagler and Golovkin took to the pinnacle of the middleweight division weren’t too dissimilar. Both fighters were largely avoided before they became undeniable because of their skill, nonstop pressure and punching power that broke their opponents with regular ease en route to becoming world champions in the 160-pound division.
Hagler, a 1993 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, finally broke through in 1980, beating Alan Minter by third-round stoppage to win the WBC belt. He went on to defend the title 12 times, including wins over fellow Hall-of-Famer Roberto Duran and John “The Beast” Mugabi. His final fight was a split-decision defeat to “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987.
Golovkin held the IBO middleweight title from 2011-18 and defended it 20 times. He also held the IBF and WBC titles during his run at 160 pounds, which included wins over Daniel Jacobs and Sergiy Derevyenchenko. The lone blemishes for Golovkin came against Canelo Alvarez.
A look at the CompuBox stats for Hagler over 15 fights and Golovkin over 19 fights.
Hagler (62-3-2, 52 KOs):
- 28.4 punches landed per round
- 65.7 punches thrown per round
- 8.8 jabs landed per round
- 24.2 jabs thrown per round
- 19.5 power punches landed per round
- 41.5 power punches thrown per round
Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs):
- 23.5 punches landed per round
- 64.1 punches thrown per round
- 9.8 jabs landed per round
- 32.1 jabs thrown per round
- 13.7 power punches landed per round
- 31.9 power punches thrown per round
Both fighters threw a lot of punches and fought at a fast pace, but Hagler, who could fight out of orthodox and southpaw, was much more efficient in every aspect. He landed 43.2 percent of his punches compared to 36.7 percent for Golovkin. Power punches made up 63.2 percent of Hagler’s punches thrown, while they made up 50 percent of Golovkin’s output.
Hagler also attacked the body more, averaging 6.4 punches landed per round, compared to 3.5 for Golovkin.
Statistically, Golovkin was the better fighter defensively. Opponents landed 9.5 of 27 (35.2%) power punches per round against him, whereas opponents landed 13.9 of 35 punches (39.7%) power punches per round against Hagler.
Hagler versus Golovkin would have been a high-contact, all-action clash. Factor in that both fighters boasted granite chins, there’s a chance this mythical matchup could have been one for the ages.
