Welterweight has been the glamor division for much of boxing history.
The best fighters at 147 pounds were often atop the sport and in the conversation to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Sugar Ray Leonard and Terence Crawford were no different. Thirty-nine years after Leonard beat Marvelous Marvin Hagler by split decision to become the WBC middleweight champion, we look at how a mythical matchup between him and Crawford could have gone.
Leonard, of Palmer Park, Maryland, and Crawford, of Omaha, Nebraska, won world titles across five divisions. Leonard won world titles between welterweight and light heavyweight, while Crawford was a world champion at lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, junior middleweight and super middleweight.
The majority of their best accomplishments came at welterweight. Leonard earned stoppage victories over three Hall of Famers in Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran and Wilfred Benitez. Crawford went 8-0 with eighth knockouts and beat the previously undefeated Errol Spence to become the undisputed champion. Crawford became the undisputed champion in three divisions, including super middleweight, with a unanimous decision win over Canelo Alvarez in his final fight.
Here is a look at the CompuBox stats from their time at 147 pounds.
Leonard (36-3-1, 25 KOs):
- 20.5 punches landed per round
- 48.3 punches thrown per round
- 5.9 jabs landed per round
- 18.7 jabs thrown per round
- 14.6 power punches landed per round
- 29.6 power punches thrown per round
Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs):
- 14.8 punches landed per round
- 45.2 punches thrown per round
- 4.7 jabs landed per round
- 22.9 jabs thrown per round
- 10.1 power punches landed per round
- 45.3 power punches thrown per round
Both fighters were judicious with their offense, preferring to make their punches count rather than leaning on volume. Leonard was significantly more accurate, though, landing at a nearly 10 percent better rate. He also had the edge in percentage of power punches landed at 49.3 compared with 45.3 percent for Crawford.
Crawford was the better defensive fighter statistically. Opponents landed 28.4 percent of their power shots against him while Leonard was hit by 40.2 percent.
Leonard and Crawford were supremely skilled operators who could do it all, from outboxing their opponents to being the aggressor. Crawford could do it out of orthodox and southpaw, as well.
They also boast an innate ability to be at their best late when the fight is still up for grabs. Leonard and Crawford have also shown the ability to finish fights whenever their opponents start to fade or show signs of being hurt.
